Imperfection from buckling shape Load Combination

Hi,

I’m trying to create an imperfection based on a buckling mode shape calculated for load combination CO2 and apply it to CO9, which is a copy of CO2. However, the program does not seem to let me select a load combination as the source for the imperfection.

When I use a load case instead, everything works fine: I can generate the imperfection and assign it to a load combination.

Am I missing something?

I’ve attached screenshots illustrating the problem, along with the model file.

Hi dbesed,

Thank you for your request.

The load combination CO9 is used as the source for the imperfection. For the copied CO9, activate the Stability Analysis:

Then create a new imperfection case. You can now select CO9 as the source:

In the Combination Wizard, specify that the imperfection is to be applied to the (generated) load combinations:

Thanks, that works. But I still don’t understand what the problem was.

Do I have to make a copy of the automatically generated combination, calculate the stability analysis for the copied combination, derive the imperfection from it, and then assign that imperfection to the automatically generated combination?

Why doesn’t it work the other way around? For example:

  1. Calculate the automatically generated combination with the Stability Analysis add-on.

  2. Derive the imperfection from the buckling shape.

  3. Make a copy of the combination.

  4. Assign the derived imperfection to the copied combination.

Is there a reason why this workflow is not possible?

Hi dbesed,

I should apologize for that; I could have mentioned or better explained it. Generated load combinations cannot be used as the basis for this type of imperfection.
On the one hand, generated load combinations are overwritten (regenerated) during the generation process; on the other hand, circular references can occur.
