Settlement Determination

Hello everyone!

I am using the geotechnical analysis plugin of RFEM 6 for the modeling and calculations of different foundation systems for my thesis.

Regardless of the system to be modeled (Raft or Piles), my thesis advisor asked me what methodology the software uses for the determination of settlements.
If it uses any particular theory, in that case, which one?
I would also like to know if the results obtained consider only the instantaneous settlement or also the one corresponding to consolidation, and if it is possible to calculate one or the other separately.

Thank you very much!

Hi mariano.brandan,

A warm welcome to you in the community!

You can find the exact theoretical backgrounds for the Geotechnical Analysis add-on and in particular Pile elements in our Geotechnical Analysis Online Manual and the Pile Structural Elements.

In short, RFEM 6 offers two main approaches for soil-structure interaction:

Regarding your question about settlements:

  • Current State: RFEM 6 calculates immediate (instantaneous) settlements. Time-dependent consolidation analysis is not yet implemented. We have already logged this as a required user story and added your vote to the user story.
  • Workaround: You may can approximate time-dependent behavior by utilizing our Time-Dependent Analysis (TDA) add-on with creeping material properties.

If you wish, you can also submit your thesis to us after completion and receive great benefits: Submit Your Thesis to Dlubal.

Best of luck with your research!
