Error in Imperfection Buckling Load Case with non-linear analysis!

Dear Dlubal Support Team,

I am contacting you regarding a calculation issue in RFEM 6.

For the Weir Gate steel model, the eigenvalue buckling analysis runs successfully and the buckling modes are calculated. However, when I try to use buckling mode 1 as an imperfection and run the corresponding imperfection case / geometrically nonlinear analysis, the calculation stops with an error. "Please inform the software company and provide it with data about the concerned model."

Model / analysis information:

  • Software: RFEM 6.14
  • Structure type: Shell/plate structure of a hydraulic steel gate
  • Analysis performed: Stability analysis / eigenvalue buckling
  • Buckling modes: Successfully calculated
  • Critical issue: Imperfection based on buckling mode 1 cannot be calculated
  • Problem: The model calculates the modes, but the imperfection case does not solve due to an error

We would also appreciate your recommendation for the correct procedure to perform the buckling / imperfection analysis for this shell structure in RFEM 6.

Attached: RFEM model screenshots of the error/settings.
I can send you model in DM.

Best regards,
Nouman

Hello Nouman,

A warm welcome to you in the community! :waving_hand:

To analyze the problem more precisely, the model file would be very helpful:

:right_arrow: Click on FileSave as and choose the following settings to reduce the file size:

:right_arrow: Then upload the file here (e.g. *.rf6, *.rs9) – this way, the community can also contribute to the solution.

:owl: Prefer not to share the file publicly? No problem – send it to me via direct message: click on my profile picture or user nameMessage.

:face_with_monocle: Without having seen the model, however, this could be a known issue: Assigning the imperfections to a load combination from which the underlying buckling configuration was also generated creates a circular reference.

:speech_balloon: One solution to this problem could be to copy the load combination (or the entire design scenario). Do not assign any imperfections here; instead, generate the buckling figures from these and assign them.

Best regards,
Marc
