Horizontal loads on canopy columns using wind load wizard

I have a shed with a roof and no walls.

What I need: Automatically generated horizontal wind load on columns.

Problem 1: The type for flat roofs in the wind load wizard only creates loads on the roof, but does not create any loads on the columns.

Problem 2: The type for vertical walls in the wind load wizard creates loads on the columns, but the load is based on the assumption that there are vertical walls resisting the wind and thus creating unrealistically big loads on the columns.

I have no vertical walls, and so the load on the columns should be calculated only based on their cross-section width and the shape factor.

Question: How to model the wind loads on each of the vertical members using the wind load wizard when there are no vertical walls?

I think you need to manually calculate wind load in this case. I never do this for these kind of low structures as wind load on columns will be very low. I calculate wind pressure on roof edge, friction etc. to get maximum horizontal load at roof level.

Hi Wolfram,

Thank you for your reply.

I also have a taller lattice structures, such as the one in the photo, as high as 25 to 30 meters, with tens of members made from many cross-sections.

It is not practical to calculate the wind load on each member manually.

Hi PSA001,

in RFEM 6 the wind load wizard generates load cases according to the standards for closed buildings. If you want to analyze open structures like your shed, the best approach is to use RWIND. With RWIND you can run a wind simulation on the actual geometry and obtain realistic pressure distributions directly on the columns, considering their cross-section width and exposure.

That way you get exactly the horizontal wind action you are looking for on each member.

Hello Ann Kathrin,

Thank you for your reply.

After RWIND generates the loads on each individual member,
will I be able to export those loads as member loads to the model
in RFEM 6?

yes, that’s possible. The loads calculated in RWIND can be exported directly back to your RFEM 6 model and applied as member loads.

For a step-by-step overview, I’d recommend this webinar recording:

It shows the workflow in detail – from setting up the wind simulation to transferring the results into RFEM.
