I have been tasked with designing a concrete foundation for a 400 kW generator using the ACI 351.3R code.
I need to perform an analysis considering not only static loads but also the dynamic loads generated by the machine during operation.
I am looking for webinars or tutorials that can help me simulate the soil-structure interaction, specifically the vibration response of the machine-foundation-soil system under normal operating conditions.
In RFEM, we currently do not have the option to directly perform soil-structure interaction for dynamic loads. This means that the Impedance Modeling from chapter 5, “IMPEDANCE OF THE SUPPORTING MEDIUM”, in the referenced standard “ACI 351.3R”, cannot be explicitly modeled in the program.
However, a possible workaround to achieve your objective would be to manually calculate springs/links that represent the foundation and its dynamic response. You can then integrate these elements into either a Response Spectrum Analysis or a Time History Analysis.
Please note that special care must be taken when calculating the equivalent stiffness, as simple stiffness values would need to match the dynamic properties of the soil-foundation interaction . I recommend looking for references that use this method to validate whether it’s the correct approach for your case.
