Hi,
I am modelling a multi-layer CLT structure in RFEM 6 and have encountered an issue with the interaction between Surface Contacts and Line Hinges.
The model consists of several 2D timber surfaces at different elevations, with the CLT layers stacked vertically. I use Surface Contact between the overlapping timber surfaces to represent the contact between the layers.
Each CLT layer is divided into four separate panels, which will be connected by screws. I want the joints between these panels to transfer forces but not bending moments, so I introduced line hinges along the panel joints, keeping the translational connection but releasing the rotation along the joint.
The issue is:
-
Without the line hinges: the model meshes and calculates successfully with the Surface Contacts.
-
With the line hinges: RFEM reports “Incorrect topology of surface contact.”
I am not sure why adding a rotational line hinge between panels within one layer causes the Surface Contact between the stacked layers to become invalid.
Is there a better way to model this arrangement in RFEM 6?
The intended behaviour is that the stacked CLT layers remain in contact, while the individual CLT panels within each layer are connected by screws and can transfer forces across the joints, but without transferring bending moments.
Any suggestions on the most appropriate modelling approach would be appreciated.
Thanks!
